Day 14
19/8/2010
Weather in Fremantle today is beautiful, clear blue skies, slight off shore breeze and a really nice day about 18 degrees.
We have been out and about a little today, after retrieving my sunglasses from Brett we went to the marina for a taste of the reputed “Best Fish & Chips in WA”, obviously we were at the wrong restaurant, we still have 4 hours later a greasy taste in our mouth, tomorrow will again try for the “Best Fish & Chips in WA”.
I have always said Sheryle has the ears of an eagle, this time she picked up a noise in the gearbox of the car, at idle it sounded as if 4 wheel drive had been partially engaged. We found a diesel mechanic locally who had a good look and listen, “well” he said, “some good news and some bad news” uh oh what now, how much and how long. Obviously he heard the gears going in both Sheryle and my heads and the look of total fear, “well mainly all good news” he said, “in my 30 years experience I strongly believe the noise to be gear rattle”, he then went on to explain at about the 190 to 200 thousand kilometers this noise may start, by adjusting the of the motor idle the noise disappears, he felt the idling was a little slow and bumped it from 500rpm to 750rpm immediately the noise ceased. He said quietly to Sheryle “can you hear the noise now” no was the reply “then if you hear it again, this is the volume knob on the radio, just turn it up and the noise will go away”.
He the mechanic, pointed out very clearly, now this is his words not mine, please remember HIS words, a
Toyota will have this gear rattle start at about 120 to 150 thousand ks, the gear box in a Nissan Patrol is
the strongest on the market, what a great guy he is!
Tonight was the last night Mary will have as a free woman as she will be at the hospital at 7am for the baby to be induced, to celebrate, Brett and Mary took both sets of parents out to dinner at a local Thai restaurant, if chili does not get this baby on the move, well, I don’t know what will.
After dinner Sheryle and I went to a local café for coffee and see if we could get onto a Wi Fi for Sheryle with her iPad, no luck, at least she did get coverage unfortunately they were locked, it is all a learning curve with this new techno.
Catch you tomorrow
